Director, Risk Management

The Director of Risk sits within the First Line of Defence and aligns with the expectations of CBRE’s Enterprise Risk Management policy.  They support the UK Risk Management Committee in identifying, documenting, managing, and monitoring key strategic, regulatory and compliance risks. They will foster and sustain effective and collaborative relationships as a business partner to key stakeholders across UK Advisory. The role will be a key partner to corporate support functions in the UK. These functions include Finance and Controllership, UK and EMEA Compliance team, UK and EMEA Legal teams, People and Learning & Development, Procurement, Marketing, Communications, Digital & Technology and Internal Audit. 

What you will be doing:

Risk Management
  • Act as a strategic business partner to Senior Leadership in the UK, overseeing the UK Risk Management Committee and advising the business on the development and execution of its Risk Management programme. 
  • Own and manage the UK risk register, present to Risk Management Committee, and suggest risk mitigation actions and continued improvement. 
  • To create and deliver a Risk-based monitoring programme for UK Board approval and reporting, including regular review and updates.
  • Support the UK’s contribution to CBRE’s global Enterprise Risk Management programme, including feedback on the global Business Risk Inventory. 
  • Facilitate the execution of the UK’s New Venture Risk Assessment and escalate issues to the Global New Venture Risk Assessment Process as appropriate.  Foster a culture of Senior Management accountability and engagement with risk management. 
  • Support corporate governance involving external risk reporting to stakeholders and clients
  • Incorporate material regulatory findings and enforcement outcomes into risk assessments and governance escalation.
  • Partner with Risk Management colleagues across CBRE’s global network, and with our regulated business activities in Continental Europe and across the globe.

Quality and Best Practice
  • Manage and Oversee delivery of CBRE UK’s Quality management and Best Practice team, supporting the development and delivery of CBRE’s ISO Certification program and the associated internal and external audits.
  • To oversee the management of client complaints and to work closely with management to ensure that full investigation, remediation, and close-out happens within agreed timeframes

People Management
  • Lead, and grow over time, a high-performing and engaged team of Compliance professionals, consisting of the Risk Senior Manager, the Quality Assurance Manager, and other consultants and other staff as required. 
  • Attract, select, develop, and retain key talent to the Risk and Compliance team as needed. 
  • Responsible for all aspects of staff management within the team, including but not limited to recruitment, induction, setting objectives, appraisals, team meetings, training, compliance, performance management and staffing levels.

Other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time in the company’s discretion.

What you will need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, or related field.; Advanced degree (MBA/MS) preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years in risk, audit, controls, reporting, compliance, and enterprise governance. 
  • A professional designation in Compliance, Internal Audit, Accounting, Risk Management or Legal practice areas.
  • CRM, ARM, PRM, CPA, CFA, or CIA preferred
  • Prior experience in real estate investment and advisory, or related service organizations. 
  • Requires knowledge of property and how transactions could be affected by a conflict of interest.
  • Associate or Chartered Membership of the RICS (Desirable)
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of financial terms, principles and compliance. Reviews complex financial/business analysis and reports prepared by subordinates. Ability to analyse the most complex business/financial data and develop innovative solutions. Develops and implements financial policies and procedures. Approves and oversees department budget.
  • Ability to comprehend, analyse, and interpret the most complex business documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive issues. Ability to write reports, manuals, speeches and articles using distinctive style. Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to employees, clients, top management and/or public groups. Ability to motivate and negotiate effectively with key employees, top management, and client groups to take desired action.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to handle conflict, teamwork, empathy, listening, and a positive attitude.
  • Proactive problem solver that leads by example and models behaviours that are consistent with the company's values.
  • Collaborative and commercially minded, ensuring decisions are made with in-depth understanding and interpretation of procedures, company policies and business practices to achieve complex results. 
  • Responsible for setting project, department and/or division deadlines. Errors in judgment may cause long-term impact to line of business and/or overall company.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer software and hardware (i.e. Microsoft Office suite products). Advanced organizational skills, attention to detail. Ability to work well under pressure with proactive approach to routine and non-routine occurrences.
