Purpose of Role

The purpose of the ICT Technician role is to install and monitor hardware and ensure cost-efficient technical and maintenance activities in the BNEW SAN Lab Operations technical environments and data centres that meet our users’ requirements and their business needs. The primary stakeholder is Ericsson R&D.

Job Description

  • Collect equipment from goods receiving department/stores. Move into the environment area (Data Centers & Networks etc.). Unpack and prepare for installation.
  • Interworking with Facility Management (FM) as necessary to plan and initiate installations. Where necessary, be involved in discussions and planning related to facilities infrastructure (FI) in the test environment area, including labs and control rooms.
  • Handling of internal/external requests for support and supply via the Lab Ops ticketing tool e-Start.
  • Physical installation/dismantling of hardware in a Data Center environment.
  • Installation and integration of system extensions.
  • Cabling, connections (distribution frames) & documentation of same.
  • Rack mounting of equipment.
  • Ensure compliance to OHS (Operational Health & Safety) guidelines and regulations.
  • Perform decommissioning (removal of HW) in accordance with agreed process.
  • Troubleshoot and problem solving.
  • On Call availability as required.
  • Supervise & maintain the Data Centre and Networks referring to local “Occupational Health and Safety” (OH&S) instructions.
  • Act as interface towards third party suppliers for handling of returns, spare parts, and hardware support issues.
  • Administration and management of storage area for cabling and spare parts.
  • Asset inventory of equipment and hardware using tools provided.
  • Audit of hardware deployments in labs as and when requested.

Typical Interfaces

Colleagues in various Ericsson units and specifically in Lab Site Operations (LSO) and in other Lab Operations units, other technicians and engineers, Line Management, Project Management, Local Facility Management Organization, 3rd party suppliers, etc.

Tools & Resources

An ICT Technician in Ericsson must be familiar with a number of generic tools as well as tools and environments specific to Lab Operations. For example:

  • Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio.
  • Collaboration tools e.g. MS Teams, SharePoint
  • Web applications as necessary e.g. browsers, search engines, document archive systems e.g. Eridoc.
  • eStart, a Lab Ops application for request handling and incident management.
  • Hydra, a Lab Ops tool for data centre management.
  • Equipman, a Lab Ops tool for asset administration.
  • Confluence, a web-based tool for ordering and prioritising tasks/tickets in a collaborative and agile way of working.
  • Check MK, a monitoring tool deployed across Lab Ops technical spaces.
  • Other tools as appropriate and applicable.

Qualification & Technical Competency

  • The ICT Technician must have a third level technical qualification or a minimum of two years’ experience in a relevant role.
  • Ideally the candidate will be familiar with data centres from an ICT perspective.
  • Familiarity with commissioning, decommissioning and repurposing of IT hardware.
  • A good knowledge of operational health and safety (OHS).

As Lab Ops is supporting the move into new business areas, complexity is increasing, and more demands are put on ICT Technicians. Trends in ICT show a growing need to enhance technical competencies.
