Job Overview
Under general supervision, calibrates, maintains, and performs minor repairs for scientific instrumentation, including liquid chromatography systems, gas chromatographs, spectrophotometers, and laboratory data acquisition systems.
Primary duties and responsibilities
Disassembles, inspects, cleans, repairs, calibrates, tests, and performs periodic maintenance of specialty equipment, systems, and controls.
Operates electronic test equipment, including multimeters, frequency generators and counters, galvanometers, digital logic probes, and oscilloscopes.
Performs sophisticated repairs or coordinates the removal of instruments/devices needing overhaul during scheduled maintenance.
Records and reports abnormal functions or out-of-tolerance conditions of equipment and initiates corrective action and documentation.
Reinstalls, tests, evaluates, calibrates, and maintains instruments or devices upon completion of repairs.
Locates part sources, estimates costs, and prepares requisitions.
Documents daily records of inspections, maintenance activity, repairs, and other work performed within approved guidelines and procedures.
Coordinates with outside contractors regarding repairs covered by maintenance agreements. Communicates with customer staff and outside contractors in the calibration, repair, and operation of equipment.
May evaluate/service or resolve problems while performing unscheduled work.
Writes equipment, maintenance, and calibration procedures.
Supervisory responsibilities
No formal supervisory responsibilities in this position. Provides informal assistance such as technical mentorship, and/or training to coworkers. Coordinates and assigns tasks to co-workers within a work unit and/or project.

Education and Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required and a minimum of four years of related experience and/or training. Associates degree in scientific field of study preferred or equivalent related work experience.
One to Five years of experience in instrumentation and control or installing, calibrating, maintaining and repairing equipment or equivalent experience is preferred.
HPLC experience strongly preferred.
Certificates and Licenses
Must have appropriate license or certification where required by law.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational and analytical skills. Ability to provide efficient, timely, reliable and courteous service to customers. Ability to effectively present information.
Financial knowledge
Requires knowledge of financial terms and principles. Ability to calculate intermediate figures such as percentages, discounts, and/or commissions. Conducts basic financial analysis.
Reasoning ability
Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to solve problems involving several options in situations. Requires intermediate analytical and quantitative skills.
Other Skills and Abilities
Experience with Desktop publishing, Microsoft Office Suite, and Online Help.
Ability to read and work from blueprints, schematic diagrams and specification manuals.
Requires specialist knowledge, training, and experience related to analytical instrumentation to include selected technique groups such as HPLC, GC, Liquid Handling, Automation, Optical Systems, Biology and Chemistry Analyzers.
Scope of responsibility
Decisions made with detailed knowledge of procedures and company policies to achieve set results. Responsible for setting own project requirements. Errors in judgment may cause short-term impact to co-workers and supervisor.
